Raku
Raku, usually hand-formed, was traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony. The art has been expanded and modified to include contemporary techniques generally referred to as "Western Raku". Raku-fired pottery is quickly heated and quickly cooled, either in the open air, water, or a container with combustible materials. Glaze may be applied before firing, or organic material can be used after firing to obtain unique effects. The results of raku-firing are exciting in their unpredictability. Raku pieces remain porous, and therefore are not food-safe. They are for decorative use only.
